Recommendations for September:
Books: Canvas by Kathy Weyer—no rape/no murder/no extraordinary physical or mental abilities—just life throwing curve balls at aging women. I was surprised by how much I cared!
Charity: Consider donating to HBCU’s (Historical Black Colleges and Universities)—-I have come to the conclusion that the way for minorities to “raise themselves” socially and economically is through their own means. The mainstream does not care and will not resource them equitably. Black High Schools, not to mention Colleges are not resourced like the schools you and I attended. Likewise a podcast on public schools in New York City found me realizing that many schools with predominantly minority students have parents who worry less about integration, and more about resourcing their schools on an equitable basis with predominantly white schools. For them, resources are more important for self improvement than is integration. So with that in mind, I have decided that I won’t field the phone calls from my alma maters (usually by sweet earnest young coeds) which for the most part are equitably funded with their peer schools (UCLA and UCSC are my history). I will start donating to the HBCU Foundation as many have chronic underfunding from the states they reside in (relative to their peer “white” schools), as well as a lack of graduates contributing to endowments for their colleges. These “negro” colleges have contributed mightily to the evolution of a black middle class and we all need that to grow. Please consider contributing to the HBCU Foundation.
Podcasts: Dan Carlin keeps popping up in my posts. He is a journalist who loves history the way I like history. His podcast, Common Sense has not been produced in the wake of the Trump administration for over a year
but he just did a new edition on Afghanistan. I can’t wait to listen to it!!!
Shows: On HBO: Hacks with Jean Smart is very good.
On Netflix: Startup has engaged me as ludicrously sensational as it is. The acting is first rate.
Music: From the vault:
She Loves the Sunset by the old 99’s
I’m only a Woman by Rilo Kiley
Be Italian by Fergie
